Market Overview

Cannabis is in process of changing from an illegal controlled substance to a major industry. Mounting political pressure over the past decade, along with increasing political clout of the post-60s generation, has pushed legalization across North America. In the US, several states led the way by legalizing cannabis for medical use in the 1990s, and starting in 2012, a trend toward both decriminalization and legalization has led to 10 states legalizing the substance for all uses. Canada enacted a nation-wide measure for full legalization in October 2018, after legalizing medical use in 2014. Several European countries, and Australia, also have limited legalization regimes for cannabis.

Existing medical-use companies have branched into the recreational sector, production companies have increased their growing acreage, and distribution networks are starting to form – that last is hampered by the fact that cannabis and marijuana products are still illegal at the US Federal level, effectively preventing interstate trade.

From an investor perspective, all of this has had a predictable effect on the nascent cannabis industry. The market cap of the largest cannabis stocks has ballooned past $20 billion. For now, the volatility of the cannabis market, the rapid growth in distribution and sales, and the prospect that more US states will pursue full or partial legalization regimes, all combine to make cannabis stocks a popular choice for investors willing to take on risk.

Globally, the cannabis/marijuana industry may be worth an estimated $150 billion dollars. It’s not quite there yet, but the large cannabis companies are growing rapidly. The six largest account for over $40 billion in combined market cap. Canopy Growth (CGC) is the largest of the cannabis stocks. The company’s main focus is supplying the Canadian market for recreational use.

Next up is Aurora Cannabis (ACB). Aurora produces over 500,000 kilograms of cannabis products annually, primarily for the medical market.

Cronos (CRON) is a fast-growing producer in Canada. The company recently entered a venture project to more than double its production capabilities.

Tilray (TLRY) is a newcomer to the field, having gone public in July 2018. The company already has more than 3 million square feet of land at its disposal for cultivation.

Last but not the least, Aphria (APHA) is an Ontario-based cannabis company worth $2.53 billion. That market cap is backed by a production capacity of over 240,000 kilograms per year.
