FBR Lowers Price Target on Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (ANF) Following Q2 Miss

Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (NYSE:ANF) posted weak second-quarter earnings following domestic mall business and tourist location traffic headwinds that lead to major drops, with shares toppling 20% yesterday. On back of this second-quarter miss, FBR analyst Susan Anderson reiterates a Market Perform rating on ANF, while reducing the price target from $22 to $19.

For now, management at the teen apparel retailer anticipates traffic headwinds will carry through into 2H, and as such, have cut ANF’s 2016 outlook in response. To combat these struggles, management has attempted to change course with a new roll-out of brands at both Abercrombie & Fitch as well as at Hollister, already noting positive early reception with charged hopes that this move can solidify ANF for a comeback.

Anderson has confidence these new brand positions can “[…] drive an increase in marketing expense in 3Q16, to coincide with the addition of new brand presidents (Stacia Anderson at A&F and Kristin Scott at Hollister).” Yet, considering the time required to gain back consumers in the midst of an environment rife with competition, Anderson contends this will take more time than management might expect.

“In 2Q, ANF continued to develop its omni-channel capabilities and launched its Epic Flex assortment and loyalty program at Hollister, both of which have resonated well with customers. […] While we are encouraged by ANF’s omni-channel and brand initiatives, we remain on the sidelines and look for sustained comp/margin stability, better turnaround visibility, or a more attractive entry point,” she concludes.

According to TipRanks, which measures analysts’ and bloggers’ success rate based on how their calls perform, four-star analyst Susan Anderson is ranked #770 out of 4,129 analysts. Anderson has a 59% success rate and realizes 4.5% in her annual returns. However, when recommending ANF, Anderson loses 1.9% in average profits on the stock.

TipRanks analytics demonstrate ANF as a Hold. Based on 15 analysts polled in the last 3 months, 2 rate a Buy on ANF, 11 maintain a Hold, while 2 issue a Sell. The consensus price target stands at $20.00, marking a 9% upside from where the stock is currently trading.
